Re-NEET 2026: Everything You Need to Know

What Happened?

In one of the biggest setbacks to India's medical entrance system, the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET UG 2026 exam held on May 3 after widespread allegations of a paper leak. Over 22 lakh MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH aspirants who appeared for the exam now face the uncertainty of a rescheduled test, delayed admissions, and shaken confidence in the examination process.

"A PDF containing nearly 500–600 questions allegedly circulated on Telegram from April 29 — four days before the exam — with around 180 questions reportedly matching the final NEET UG 2026 paper."

— CBI disclosure to Delhi court

The controversy erupted when students and coaching experts noticed that a "guess paper" circulated before the exam bore an alarming resemblance to the actual question paper. The Rajasthan Special Operations Group (RSOG) launched a probe, which was subsequently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Union government.

Re-NEET 2026 Date & Key Details

The NTA officially announced that the re-conduct of NEET UG 2026 will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with approval from the Government of India. Students who appeared for the cancelled May 3 exam are automatically eligible — no fresh registration or additional fee is required.

⚠️ Yoga Day Clash: Educationist Keshav Agarwal (Coaching Federation of India) has urged authorities to reconsider the June 21 date, as it coincides with International Yoga Day. He warned that police and administrative resources will already be stretched, potentially affecting exam security and logistics.

The Paper Leak: What We Know

CBI revealed to a Delhi court that the alleged leak traces back to a source inside the NTA itself. One accused, Shubham Khairnar, reportedly obtained the leaked paper through a Pune-based contact linked to an "NTA source." The leaked paper was reportedly sold to MBBS aspirants for ₹10–12 lakh.

Political & Social Fallout

The cancellation triggered intense political reactions. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann called it a "failure of the government," highlighting a systemic "paper leak mafia." Tamil Nadu CM Stalin urged Prime Minister Modi to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET for 2026–27 and allow admissions based on Class 12 marks instead.

NSUI protesters showed black flags to Education Minister Pradhan. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) wrote to PM Modi demanding strict action and a permanent shift to computer-based exams. Tragically, at least one 17-year-old MBBS aspirant in Goa reportedly died by suicide on the day of the cancellation announcement.

"No one will be spared — the investigation will go to the root of the issue, whether they are inside or outside the NTA."
